I first saw this in a magazine ad and while I thought pretty cool, I didn’t really give it much thought. I don’t tend to gravitate towards matte products for fear of looking cakey, but after seeing this on display at Walgreens, I was intrigued enough to buy it. I will say upfront that this will be one of those products that people will either love or hate, depending on their skin type/color. Luckily, I happened to fall in the ‘love’ category and this is now my current favorite foundation. Keep reading for my thoughts. 🙂
This concludes my foundation coverage this week. I previously reviewed the L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion, Revlon Colorstay, L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte and the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundations, be sure to check those out!
At first try, I hated this foundation so much that I immediately wanted to return it. If I wasn’t sick with a cold, I would have returned it right away. It clung to the dry patches on my nose horribly and it just looked awful on my skin. I ended up putting it aside for a few days, and once I recovered from my cold, I decided to give it one more try before returning it. Much to my surprise, I loved this foundation the second time around! Silly me realized that maybe I shouldn’t be testing out new products when I’m sick with a cold and my skin is dehydrated AND my nose is so dry and red and rough of all the tissue use. Of course it clung to the dry patches on my nose. This time around, the application and finish was smooth and flawless and I’m so glad I kept it.
This coverage is on the light side, which is my preference since I prefer a light-weight finish. The website says it’s a medium coverage so I have no idea if this is buildable or not. I have normal skin, but my nose does get oily. With this foundation, and with the use of the Rimmel Stay Matte powder on my nose, I didn’t have to keep reapplying powder to get rid of the shine. I’m not a fan of having to use setting sprays or setting powders for my foundations, and I didn’t have to with this one. Another huge plus, was that even though I always use primer (I have large pores so I need something to smooth them over), this is the only foundation that I like with and without powder.
The colors are a little bit on the pink side, but I was surprised that the Warm Porcelain (o5) shade matched my skin really well. This looks too pink when you first squeeze it out, but once it’s applied to your face and blended, the color was very nice. Not too pink. I do wish they release more color options in the future, preferably some neutral shades. I didn’t get the matching beauty sponge because I prefer to apply my foundation with a brush. I actually don’t know how you would even apply this with a sponge because of its moussey texture. I apply this with a flat top buffing brush and it blends so well, a little really goes a long way with this product! I’ve been using this almost every day since I got it and it’s my current favorite foundation. I love the color, the texture, the velvety smooth finish and the coverage. Maybelline really impressed me with this product.
Let me know some of your favorite drugstore foundations. Have you used the Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation yet?
